Background Information: Character Wiki + more detailed summaries for London We Have a Problem, Dante’s Inferno, Better the De Vil You Know and The De Vil Wears Puppies.

I’d also like to point out that since this show is a distant sequel to One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the events of the animated film are technically canon.

Personality:
He may act like one of the cool kids at first, one who comes from money and can easily get his hands on the latest gadgets and such. However, Hunter can be quite manipulative and sneaky. He's been known to use underhanded tactics to get what he wants, such as vandalizing a park so he can get footage from the collar of his hairless cat or rigging a contest so that he wins the chance to spend a day with Triple-D. He’s also successfully manipulated a dalmatian into trusting him enough to let him into the dalmatian’s house.

Unfortunately, Hunter can be a bit too overconfident at times, which may allow someone to take advantage of an early victory. He’s also not too good under stress, especially after the shipping crate incident (more on that later). He may panic when he realizes he’s on the losing end, which tends to lead to bad decisions. Bitter feelings and desperation also cloud his thinking, to the point where he overlooks major details and comes up with harebrained schemes. He’s better at playing the long con than getting fast results.

Under all that though, Hunter really wants someone to belong to. The only family he really has is his Great Aunt Cruella… Who really doesn't care for him as much as she's callously using him for a lackey. Hunter only did her bidding to get her to notice him, and he really liked it when she praised him… But at the same time, her fits of rage have driven him to tears on more than one occasion. Not to mention his horror when Cruella was ready to abandon him or even have him killed with the dogs the moment he stopped being useful to her. Heck, the poor kid's got mental scars from the time he got locked in a shipping container for six months and his great aunt didn't even bother to check on him. (Again, we’ll talk about the shipping crate later.)

Despite all the bad things he willingly did for Cruella, he’s horrified to realize she was planning to kill the whole family of dalmatians in the process of making their fur into a coat. It's really telling that the lonely spoiled brat doesn't get jealous about the dogs being a big happy family while also drawing a line at violence to animals. He now sees his great aunt as a monster for going to such lengths, and after she threw him in with the dogs it’s very unlikely that he’ll want to work with anyone like her again… In fact, he actively regrets his actions and starts helping the dalmatians. Though he’s still afraid of her, he did manage to stand up to her at the end and help free the puppies from her clutches.

So about that shipping crate… After his first attempt to capture the dogs ended in him being locked in a shipping container meant to transport dogs, Hunter spent six long months having to practically live like a dog to survive. The incident has taken a toll on the poor boy’s psyche, and now he occasionally has moments where he forgets he’s a human and starts thinking like an excitable puppy! Instincts and all. The dog-like behavior is usually triggered by dog stimuli, like having a squeaky toy thrown at him or seeing the postman on duty. This makes him easily distracted, but it also doesn’t take much to snap him out of this state. One could simply startle him out of this state in Canon.

Abilities & Inventory: The only special power this kid has is the ability to speak to dogs. As in he can understand what they’re saying. For inventory, the only things he has on his person at the moment are the clothes on his back and a smartphone that won’t get reception here.

For potential Dreamotion abilities…

- Hunter will get shapeshifting abilities! On accident! I think it would be funny if he ended up actually becoming a dog whenever he starts acting like a dog. How much he’s transformed may depend on if he’s in a dream or not (if he’s not dreaming, he’ll just end up with a dog’s teeth, nails, and tail instead of the whole shebang.) Eventually he’ll gain more control over this ability, and he can always turn back to normal when he wishes… But the transformation doesn’t necessarily go away the moment he comes to his senses. If he’s only partially transformed, he may have to revert one part at a time… Fun.

- Dogshifting may come with enhanced smell.

- Building on his ability to talk to dogs, I could give him the ability to temporarily give animals the ability to speak like humans. The effect would last for thirty minutes at most.

- Hunter will want to figure out some sort of spell that might help him escape being locked in a box or a cage. This will take a lot of time to perfect, but to him it’s worth it.

Suitability & Plans: Since Hunter had only just switched sides and gone against his aunt, I imagine there’s still some lingering trauma and moral dilemmas to sort out. Getting thrown into strange dreams and adventures in Songerein would definitely test his character, as well as giving him the chance to go on quests that have nothing to do with Cruella’s goals. Definitely gonna be fun character development in that department, especially since I’m aiming for a redemption arc… Or at least a recovery arc.

But it’s not always angst and serious stuff! Throwing a rich city slicker into a rustic dream world that’s just started to rebuild itself is gonna result in some fun culture shock! No currency, no fancy things supplied to you, no hired help. Kid has to get his hands dirty. Doesn’t help that he still feels compelled to act like a dog at times, which I imagine can get even more interesting in a place where you develop powers from your imagination and emotional state. (e.g. See dreamotion abilities)

As for canonmates… Well, with Cruella in prison for her crimes and the Dalmatian family going on their merry way, Hunter doesn’t really have much of a connection to his canonmates right now. What he really wants is a family, or at least some group he feels like he belongs to. Perfect setup for a found family, and I find that sort of thing is much nicer when it’s naturally played out instead of forced. Can’t wait to see where this leads to!

Questions: Hopefully the wikis cover the history fairly well. If they aren’t sufficient, I’m happy to write up a summary for you.

Also, a few questions about NPCs. See, 101 Dalmatian Street mainly features talking animal characters. While most of them have human owners, they’re also capable of intelligent thought, speech (as in talking to other animals, most humans can’t understand them in canon) and doing complex tasks like taking care of a house and holding down service animal jobs like people do. With that context…

1. Is it possible to introduce an animal as an NPC? Like Dalmation # 57 for example? If so, would they be given access to the same translator deal as the other NPCs and would they be able to get “jobs” like keeping the rat population down in farm areas or delivering things? These NPCs are free to get adopted by other NPCs… Or they think it’s the other way around.

2. Assuming the above is allowed, I had an idea for introducing the World Wide Woof to Songerein through a dog NPC teaching other pets about it. The World Wide Woof is basically a doggy messaging system: One dog barks out a message, another dog picks up the message and passes it along, and so on until the message spreads through town. I thought this would be a fun way to introduce a quest, since people who can understand animals (like Hunter) could pass along news or emergency reports from the dogs to the rest of the characters. Is something like this allowed?

3. Hunter had a hairless cat named Cuddles. He only spoke in meows, and mainly served as a sidekick/lackey with little characterization until he betrayed his human. If I were to bring that cat to Songerein at a later date, would he be a regainable pet or would I have to make a similar NPC? (One of Cuddles’ littermates, perhaps?)
